An 18-year-old man died in the hospital after he suffered serious injuries when he was shot at an apartment complex in Waukegan Saturday evening.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 9 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of South Genesee Street in Waukegan for a report of shots fired.

Officers arrived and located numerous spent shell casings and a firearm at an apartment complex, Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said.

Officers were notified a short time later that a shooting victim had been dropped off at an area hospital.

The victim, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries, Florip said.

It was later confirmed he had been shot at the scene of the Genesee Street shooting.

The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to investigate the incident.

The victim was pronounced dead on Sunday at the hospital. Florip said the victim is believed to be a Hainesville resident.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Monday.

The victim’s identity will be released following the autopsy and notification to the family.

Florip said further information regarding the number of shell casings recovered and the type of firearm recovered are not being released.

No one is in custody yet.
