The coroner’s office has released the identity of an 18-year-old man who died after he had been shot at an apartment complex in Waukegan Saturday evening.
An autopsy performed Monday showed that Michael Reed Jr., 18, of Hainesville, died as a result of a gunshot wound to his back, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.
The Waukegan Police Department responded around 9 p.m. Saturday to the 500 block of South Genesee Street in Waukegan for a report of shots fired.
Officers arrived and located numerous spent shell casings and a firearm at an apartment complex, Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said.
Officers were notified a short time later that Reed had been dropped off at an area hospital.
Reed suffered serious injuries, Florip said.
It was later confirmed he had been shot at the scene of the Genesee Street shooting.
The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to investigate the incident.
Reed was pronounced dead on Sunday at the hospital.
Florip said further information regarding the number of shell casings recovered and the type of firearm recovered are not being released.
No one is in custody yet.
