A 23-year-old man was arrested after prosecutors say he tried entering an apartment complex in Waukegan while armed with a loaded rifle.

Adrian L. Garcia, 23, of Waukegan, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, criminal trespass to land and possession of a controlled substance.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said during a Tuesday bond hearing that security at Whispering Oaks apartment complex in Waukegan had been checking cars coming into the complex.

They found Garcia hiding in the backseat. The man had been banned from the property because a victim in a pending domestic battery case he is charged in lives at the complex.

Waukegan police officers responded and detained Garcia after observing him in the backseat with a backpack.

Officers found a black Aero Precision X15 rifle with 20 rounds in the magazine and six more rounds in the backpack, Katris said.

Officers also found a scale with white powder residue and a plastic bag with a white substance that field tested positive for cocaine.

Inside the backpack where the gun was found, officers found Garcia’s identification card and credit card with his name on it, Katris said.

Garcia does not have a concealed carry license or Firearm Owner’s Identification.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Garcia held on a $250,000 umbrella bond with his other pending cases.

Garcia was transported to the Lake County Jail on Tuesday and remains held in the jail.
