Authorities have identified the man who was shot multiple times and killed by police in Waukegan. He was allegedly armed with a knife and hammer and had a gas can strapped to him.

An autopsy showed that Jesus Manjarrez, 26, of Waukegan, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 1000 block of Glen Court in Waukegan for a report of a neighbor dispute.

Officers were informed of a neighbor, identified as Manjarrez, who was trying to start a chainsaw and had gasoline, Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said.

An officer arrived and found the wooden fence between the two residences in question on fire.

The officer grabbed a fire extinguisher from his squad car to put the fire out.

As the officer walked towards the fire, Manjarrez advanced at the officer, Florip said.

Manjarrez reportedly had a knife and hammer and a gas can was taped to his chest.

The officer gave commands to stop advancing and the man allegedly refused, Florip said.

Manjarrez was shot by the officer and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on Manjarrez Tuesday morning.

The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year police veteran in his 30s, Florip said.

The Illinois State Police was requested to investigate the incident.
