Clavdio Alvarez, 21, of North Chicago.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man in Waukegan after finding him with a loaded gun during a traffic stop on a vehicle suspected of being involved in a shooting.

Clavdio Alvarez, 21, of North Chicago, was charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, failure to give signal and improper turn at an intersection.

Officers observed a GMC Yukon commit traffic violations and conducted a traffic stop Monday in Waukegan, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano and court records.

Officers were familiar with the vehicle being involved in a prior shooting, Mandujano said during a Tuesday bond hearing.

Alvarez was driving the GMC and is the registered owner of the vehicle. He consented to a search of the car.

Officers had Alvarez and a front seat passenger step out of the car.

Mandujano said officers found a Glock 27 pistol under the dashboard radio between the driver seat and the front passenger seat.

The gun had a round in the chamber and a loaded extended magazine.

Alvarez admitted the gun was his, Mandujano said. The man has no Firearm Owners Identification card or concealed carry license.

Prosecutors did not provide further details on the previous shooting that Alvarez’s vehicle is suspected of being involved in.

Court records show Alvarez has not been charged in a shooting.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Alvarez held on a $300,000 bond.

Alvarez remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $30,000 cash in order to be released.

A status of attorney hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
