Firefighters extinguished a fire after a car crashed into a gas pumping station and ignited a fire at a gas station in Highland Park Thursday evening.

The Highland Park Police Department and Highland Park Fire Department responded around 5:55 p.m. Thursday to the Shell gas station, 10 Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park for a report of a fire.

A red Hyundai sedan hit one of the filling stations, causing it to be detached and knocked to the ground.

An employee at the gas station shut down the gas pumps before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire within minutes, according to fire department radio transmission.

The fire did not spread beyond the car and the car did not appear to have serious damage.

The driver of the vehicle escaped without serious injuries. The driver did not require transport to the hospital.

Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately an hour.

A tow truck towed the car from the scene.

The cause of the incident was not immediately known as the Highland Park Police Department has not returned a request for comment from Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
