A man was shot and killed by police after he allegedly fired shots during a confrontation with officers who were responding to an attempted break-in call in Zion.

The Zion Police Department responded around 6:20 p.m. Thursday to a 911 call reporting that a 47-year-old man, who is related to the 911 caller, was attempting to break into her home.

The 911 caller was at her residence in the 2800 block of Ezra Avenue in Zion and told dispatchers she had an order of protection against the relative.

Police officers responded and arrived within minutes of the call, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said.

A preliminary investigation shows two Zion police officers arrived and located the man near the back door of the residence.

When officers began speaking to him, he produced a firearm, turned and faced the officers with the firearm, Covelli said.

The man reportedly refused to drop the firearm when ordered and began firing shots.

The officers retreated and the man ran approximately one block west with the firearm.

A third Zion police officer encountered the man and shot him, Covelli said.

The manโ€™s firearm was recovered at the scene.

Officers attempted lifesaving efforts and the man was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.

None of the officers were shot during the incident. The officer who shot the man was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Covelli said it was determined the 911 caller did have an order of protection against the man but he had not yet been served with the order.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force remains on the scene to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Covelli said task force investigators and evidence technicians will process the scene, collect witness statements and interview all of the involved individuals.

The results of the investigation will be turned over to the Lake County Stateโ€™s Attorneyโ€™s Office to review.

An autopsy is being scheduled on the man, whose identity is being withheld.
