Newly released bodycam video shows a police officer fatally shooting a man, who was armed with a knife and hammer and had a gas can strapped to him, in Waukegan last month.
The Waukegan Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 1000 block of Glen Court in Waukegan for a report of a neighbor dispute.
City officials said officers received multiple 911 calls regarding a man who had smashed his neighborโs windows and lit a fence on fire.
The 911 callers reported that the man had poured gasoline on the neighborsโ house and was attempting to start up a chainsaw.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said an officer arrived and found the wooden fence between the two residences on fire.
The officer grabbed a fire extinguisher from his squad car to put the fire out.
The suspect involved was identified as Jesus Manjarrez, 26, of Waukegan.
As the officer walked towards the fire, Manjarrez advanced at the officer, Florip said.
Manjarrez had a knife and hammer and a gas can was taped to his chest.
The officer gave commands to stop advancing and the man allegedly refused, Florip said.
Manjarrez was shot by the officer and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on Manjarrez and said he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year police veteran in his 30s, Florip said.
The Illinois State Police was requested to investigate the incident.
Bodycam video was released this week by the City of Waukegan.
The state police investigation is ongoing. The investigation will be released after the Lake County Stateโs Attorney’s Office reviews it, city officials said.
