A medical helicopter flew a 5-year-old girl to a hospital in serious condition after she suffered an apparent head injury while playing at school in Beach Park Tuesday morning.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was on patrol around 10:25 a.m. and observed a woman driving in a “panicked state,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

The woman was traveling southbound on Lewis Avenue north of Beach Road in Beach Park.

The deputy turned around and pulled behind the woman, who flagged the deputy over.

The two pulled into a parking lot near the intersection.

Covelli said the deputy learned the woman had just picked up her 5-year-old daughter from a nearby school.

The girl had been attending a before-school program and was injured while playing.

It was determined she likely suffered a head injury and her condition progressively worsened throughout the morning, Covelli said.

The sheriff’s deputy immediately called for the Waukegan Fire Department.

Paramedics arrived and determined a medical helicopter was needed to transport the child to a trauma center.

A LifeNet helicopter transported the child to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Covelli said there appears to be nothing criminal in the incident.
