Police say a man shot himself in the hand after accidentally discharging his gun while cleaning it in an apartment in Woodstock Tuesday evening.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and Woodstock Police Department responded around 7 p.m. Tuesday to the 500 block of Leah Lane.

Woodstock Deputy Police Chief Ray Lanz told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that officers arrived and found an injured adult male.

Officers completed an investigation and learned the man had been cleaning his legally registered pistol in his apartment.

The man, who has a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, discharged the firearm accidentally, Lanz said.

He sustained an injury to his hand which was treated on the scene by paramedics.

The man was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry for treatment.

The man’s injury was non-life-threatening and no one else was shot during the incident.

Lanz said no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
