A heavy police presence remains over eight hours after an apparent standoff began involving a subject at a Highland Park residence that is refusing to surrender to police.
The City of Highland Park issued a community advisory around 12:55 p.m. about a situation in the 1300 block of St. Johns Avenue.
The city said the incident is contained to a residence on the street.
Residents in the area were asked to stay indoors and to follow police directions.
Those who do not live in the area are asked to stay away, the city said.
Bystanders reported that officers have blocked St. Johns Avenue from Lincoln Avenue West to Wade Street.
The city said a man was inside a home threatening to harm himself. Police believe there are firearms in the residence.
The city said around 8:20 p.m. that the situation remained ongoing.
The scene is secure and there is no community-wide risk, officials said.
“We greatly appreciate the patience of residents impacted by this incident in allowing our public safety professionals to continue to work to resolve this incident,” the city said in a statement.
