A police standoff involving a man threatening to harm himself ended peacefully Friday evening following more than 10 hours of negotiations.

The City of Highland Park issued a community advisory around 12:55 p.m. Friday about a situation in the 1300 block of St. Johns Avenue.

The city said the incident was contained to a residence on the street.

Residents in the area were asked to stay indoors and to follow police directions.

Those who did not live in the area were asked to stay away, the city said.

Bystanders reported that officers blocked St. Johns Avenue from Lincoln Avenue West to Wade Street.

The city said a man was inside a home threatening to harm himself. Police believed there were firearms in the residence.

The city said around 11:30 p.m. that the situation had ended.

The man involved voluntarily left the residence and was evaluated by paramedics.

“There is no threat to public safety as a result of this incident. The safety perimeter has been lifted, and access to the 1300 block of St. Johns Ave. has been restored,” the city said.

“The City greatly appreciates the patience of residents within the closure, which contributed to the safe resolution of this incident.”
