Route 41 in Gurnee was shut down for hours Saturday evening after a semi-truck hit a sedan that crossed in front of it, causing serious injuries to a driver, police said.
The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 6:03 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of Route 41 and Ferndale Street.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said officers received a call for a crash involving a semi-truck and sedan.
Officers arrived and located a red 1997 Toyota sedan with extensive damage after it collided with a semi-truck.
Gaylor said an initial investigation indicates the driver of the Toyota attempted to cross Route 41 from Ferndale Street.
The Toyota was traveling southbound on Ferndale Street and was struck as it crossed the northbound lanes of Route 41.
The driver of the Toyota was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with serious injuries, Gaylor said.
The semi-truck driver did not sustain any injuries.
Investigators with the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to the scene and assisted with the crash investigation.
Route 41 between Delany Road and Grand Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours.
The crash remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department.
