A woman was arrested after police say she drove drunk and recklessly at a high rate of speed, causing a crash that left a man seriously injured on Route 120 near Gurnee.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10 p.m. Wednesday to Route 120 and Route 21 for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said deputies arrived and located two vehicles with extensive damage.
The vehicles were located on westbound Route 120 just east of the Route 21 overpass.
A preliminary investigation showed a Volkswagen GTI was being driven by Maribel Gomez, 42, of the 7300 block of West 76th Street Summit.
The Volkswagen was traveling westbound on Route 120 recklessly at a high rate of speed, Covelli said.
While traveling westbound, Gomez drove into another westbound vehicle, a GMC Sonoma pickup truck, which was driven by a 46-year-old Waukegan man.
The impact caused the GMC to be launched onto a raised concrete shoulder barrier, Covelli said.
The driver of the GMC sustained significant, serious injuries which are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Gomez was treated and released by paramedics at the scene.
She was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and had an open container of alcohol in the car with her, Covelli said.
Gomez was arrested and charged with aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, open transportation of alcohol, driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Lake County Judge James Simonian ordered Gomez held on a $25,000 bond during a Thursday morning bond hearing.
Gomez remains held in the Lake County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court again on October 17.
