A good Samaritan rescued an unconscious man from a car that was engulfed in flames following a crash in Waukegan that left two others hospitalized Saturday evening.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 8:30 p.m. Saturday to Belvidere Road and Dilger Avenue for a vehicle crash with injuries.
The crash involved two vehicles, one of which then crashed into a parked car on the car dealership lot at the intersection.
Paulina Castillo told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that she and her husband, Diego Uguna, were driving to get food when they came upon the crash.
The two noticed one of the vehicles involved was on fire and Uguna made a u-turn.
Uguna parked his car and ran towards the burning vehicle.
Three other bystanders were already trying to rescue the driver of the burning vehicle.
The driver was trapped in the car but Uguna was able to successfully free the man by going around to the passenger side and pulling him out.
Uguna dragged the man away from the fire onto the street. The victim was unconscious and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Castillo said the two occupants in the other car were also unconscious.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said all three victims were transported to local hospitals and survived.
Florip said it is unknown what caused the crash or if either of the drivers were under the influence.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
