Authorities have released the identity of a 42-year-old man who was shot multiple times after well over a dozen shots were fired towards a car he was sitting in at a residence in Waukegan.

An autopsy showed that Sergio Berrios, 42, of Beach Park, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

The Waukegan Police Department responded just after 12 a.m. Monday for a call of shots fired in the 1300 block of Chestnut Street in Waukegan.

Officers arrived and located a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home that had been shot numerous times, according to Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip.

Officers also discovered that a victim was inside the vehicle. The victim, identified as Berrios, appeared to be the driver of the vehicle.

The Waukegan Fire Department was called to the scene.

Berrios was shot numerous times and pronounced dead at the scene, Florip said.

The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division was called to investigate.

Florip said the motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. Investigators believe the crime was not random.

Over 20 shell casings were spotted on the street in front of the residence.

The exact number of casings recovered and their calibers are not being released, Florip said.
