A woman was arrested after she allegedly fired shots in the parking lot of a gas station in Waukegan and was later found in possession of the gun allegedly used in the shooting.
Diamond A. Martell, 21, of Waukegan, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, driving on a revoked license, expired registration, illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal display plate attachment.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Francis DeRosa said Martell shot a gun into the air in the parking lot of a BP gas station in Waukegan on October 3.
The shooting was caught on surveillance video and Martell fled the scene, DeRosa said.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on Martell’s vehicle near Glen Rock Avenue and Salem Avenue in Waukegan on October 9.
Martell was arrested after officers connected the woman to the shooting, DeRosa said.
She was found illegally possessing a Ruger handgun that police determined was the same one used in the October 3 shooting.
Martell made admissions to the police and told them she got the gun a month prior for safety reasons, DeRosa said.
DeRosa said that it was unknown why Martell fired the gun at the BP.
The woman does not have a Firearm Owners Identification Card or a concealed carry license; however, only a misdemeanor charge for the possession of the gun was filed.
When asked by the judge why only the misdemeanor was filed, DeRosa said the state’s attorney’s office approved felony charges for the gun possession.
As of Tuesday, court records show the aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charges have not been filed.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak noted during the bond hearing that Martell has a pending drug case in Ohio.
Potkonjak ordered Martell held on a $100,000 bond. She remains held in the Lake County Jail.
