Police say a pedestrian died from their injuries after they were hit by a car while trying to cross Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills Tuesday evening.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 9:34 p.m. Tuesday to Algonquin Road and Hilltop Drive.

Lake in the Hills Deputy Police Chief Matthew Mannino said officers received a call for a vehicle that struck a pedestrian at the intersection.

The victim was reported to be unconscious and not breathing following the crash, according to fire department radio traffic.

The vehicle, a 2001 Honda Civic, had been traveling eastbound on Algonquin Road at Hilltop Drive.

The vehicle struck the victim, who was crossing Algonquin Road, Mannino said.

Paramedics arrived and began rendering medical treatment to the victim.

The pedestrian was transported to Huntley Northwestern Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced deceased, Mannino said.

Police did not say whether the driver of the vehicle was believed to be under the influence or if they were arrested on any charges.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Lake in the Hills Police Traffic Accident Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy is in the process of being scheduled by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the autopsy and notification to their family.
