James R. Ziah, 67, of Arlington Heights.

A 67-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly drove drunk and caused a three-vehicle crash in Buffalo Grove that left one person hospitalized with multiple injuries.

James R. Ziah, 67, of Arlington Heights, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence causing an accident with bodily harm, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded Friday to a report of a four-car crash in Buffalo Grove, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Lillian Lewis.

Officers learned that Ziah had been driving a vehicle and rear-ended another vehicle, which was stopped at a red light.

The driver of the struck vehicle suffered broken ribs and a laceration to their lung.

Paramedics transported them to a local hospital for treatment and they were admitted to the hospital overnight.

Two additional vehicles were involved in the crash but Lewis said she did not have information on whether those occupants were injured.

Lewis said officers spoke to Ziah, who admitted he had a beer and a “couple of Jacks.”

Ziah showed signs of impairment on field sobriety tests and he smelled of alcohol, Lewis said.

Ziah performed a breath test that gave a result of 0.245, which is three times over the legal limit.

Lake County Judge Jacquelyn Melius ordered Ziah held on a $30,000 bond.

Ziah was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting 10% of his bond.

A status of attorney hearing is scheduled for October 28.
