A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized in unknown condition after he was shot while on a bike path behind Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan Wednesday afternoon.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to the area of the Waukegan Public Schools Operation Center, 215 Edison Court, for a shooting.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said the incident occurred north of Washington Street on the Robert McClory Bike Path.

Officers arrived to find one victim who had been shot on the bike path.

The victim was directly behind Miguel Juarez Middle School. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown.

Florip said the victim was identified as a 16-year-old boy, who is a Waukegan resident.

Paramedics transported the teenager to an area hospital where he is expected to survive. His condition was not available.

Florip said a white SUV was seen leaving the area at the time of the shooting. It is unknown if the white SUV is involved.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, Florip said, adding that the case remains under active investigation.
