Prosecutors say a nurse was caught in the middle of attempting to sexually assault a woman, who is completely non-verbal, at an assisted living facility in Lincolnshire.
Cristian Esteban, 23, of Des Plaines, was charged with attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault of a handicapped person and aggravated battery of a handicapped person.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said that Esteban was a nurse employed at the Riverside Foundation, which is located at 14588 Route 22 in Lincolnshire.
The Riverside Foundation includes a residential facility that serves nearly 100 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to the organization’s website.
A fellow nurse walked into a resident’s room and saw Esteban with his trousers and underwear pulled down to his mid-thigh, Katris said.
The nurse also saw that the victim, a woman in her 30s, had her clothing pulled down to her ankles.
The woman was bent over the bed and Esteban was behind her, Katris said.
A substance, believed to be semen, was found on the victim’s clothing. The incident occurred on Wednesday, court records show.
Esteban allegedly admitted to a co-worker that he touched the victim and also said, “I’m probably going to lose my job.”
Katris said that the victim is disabled and non-communicative. She lives with assistance at the facility.
While prosecutors said Esteban was a nurse, state records show he is not registered as a nurse but is registered in the state’s health care worker registry.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Esteban held on a $1 million bond.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 23.
