Tyrell Sumlin, 29, of Gurnee

A man was arrested after he allegedly fled and resisted police when they found a gun in his car during a traffic stop in Waukegan last week, causing an officer to suffer a fractured thumb.

Tyrell Sumlin, 29, of Gurnee, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession or use of a weapon by a felon, resisting a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance, no registration light, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration.

On October 30, a Waukegan police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Sumlin because it had no rear registration, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano said.

The officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and Sumlin allegedly indicated he had just finished smoking marijuana and said he had more.

Sumlin showed more marijuana to the officer and the marijuana in an improperly sealed cardboard container, Mandujano said.

Officers searched the vehicle and found an unchambered Ruger handgun with four rounds in the center console.

Sumlin allegedly fled from officers on foot.

Officers wrestled Sumlin to the ground and struggled with him as he tried to pull away and get back up, Mandujano said.

One officer sustained a fractured right thumb due to the struggle and was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where x-rays confirmed the fracture.

Sumlin allegedly had 3.7 grams of a rock-like substance in his shoes that later field-tested positive for cocaine.

Sumlin has nine prior criminal cases in Lake County, court records show.

He was convicted in attempted robbery and stolen vehicle cases in 2010, as well as being convicted in September 2021 of disorderly conduct.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak set Sumlin’s bond at $250,000.
