Police officers responding to a call of shots fired found a man shot multiple times and deceased inside a residence in Zion Sunday evening, officials said.

The Zion Police Department responded around 5:32 p.m. Sunday to the 2100 block of Bethesda Boulevard for a report of shots fired in a residence.

Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli said officers arrived at the residence to find it was locked.

The officers knocked and received no answer from inside.

Kehrli said officers forced open the front door due to the credible report of shots fired and the need to check on the wellbeing of the occupants.

A deceased man was found lying on the ground inside the home.

The man appeared to have multiple gunshot wounds to his body and the wounds appeared to have just occurred, Kehrli said.

No one else was found inside the residence. The identity of the deceased man was not immediately determined.

Kehrli said an adult male who lives at the residence was later located in Chicago and brought back to the Zion Police Department for questioning.

Additional details will be released once they become available, Kehrli said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy on the victim.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the Zion Police Department are actively investigating the case.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to call the Zion Police Department at 847-872-8000 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.

The Sunday homicide was the second homicide in less than 24 hours in Zion.
