A 40-year-old woman died after she crashed her car into a mailbox and a tree, leaving her trapped inside the car, early Monday morning near McHenry, the sheriff’s office said.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District, Spring Grove Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:19 a.m. Monday to the 5700 block of Fox Lake Road in unincorporated McHenry.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call for a single-vehicle crash on Fox Lake Road south of Route 12.

Deputies arrived to find a 2003 Toyota Corolla that crashed into a tree.

Firefighters reported the driver was trapped in the car and unresponsive.

The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation showed the Toyota was traveling southbound on Fox Lake Road.

The Toyota drove off the roadway to the west for an unknown reason and struck a mailbox and then a tree.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Toyota, was not wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The front airbags of the Toyota deployed during the crash. The driver was identified as a 40-year-old Johnsburg woman.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit was called to the scene to conduct a crash investigation.

The woman’s name is being withheld pending an autopsy and notification to her family.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
