A man in his 30s accidentally shot himself in the thigh while trying to clear a round from his handgun inside an apartment in Gurnee, police said.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 9:20 p.m. Sunday to the 5200 block of Fredrick Court in Gurnee for a report of a person shot.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the incident was a negligent discharge of a firearm.

The owner of a 9mm handgun was attempting to clear a round from the chamber when the gun was discharged.

The round entered the man’s left thigh and exited out of the back side of the thigh, Gaylor said.

Officers arrived and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg to control the bleeding.

Paramedics arrived and transported the man, who was described to be in his early 30s, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, according to fire department radio traffic.
