The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District said they are adding a new member to their department, a German Shepherd, which will be McHenry County’s first fire department search and rescue canine.

The fire district said the 5-month-old puppy is named Jäger and he is from Diehl’s Training Center in Greenwood, Indiana.

His handler is Wonder Lake Firefighter-Paramedic Ginelle Hennessey.

Hennessey is working on training with Jäger on and off duty to become a certified live find search and rescue canine.

Jäger is working on basic obedience, exercising, directional alerting and tracking and trailing off-leash.

The duo is training every day with a certified trainer at Dogstyle in Vernon Hills.

The process will take approximately 18 months for Jäger to complete and achieve his certifications.

Jäger will be the first official fire department-sponsored search and rescue dog in McHenry County.
