A man in his 60s was killed during a high-speed crash that left a utility pole severed and dangling above the ground in Waukegan Saturday morning.
The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 10:30 a.m. Saturday to the area of Sheridan Road and Parmalee Place for a serious vehicle crash.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said officers arrived to find a two-vehicle crash.
A 2011 Chrysler 200 was traveling southbound in the 2000 block of Sheridan Road when it veered into a parallel southbound lane and struck the side of a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.
The Chrysler lost control and left the roadway where it struck a utility pole and then a tree.
The driver of the Chrysler, a male in his 60s from Waukegan, was pronounced dead at the scene, Florip said. He was the sole occupant of the Chrysler.
The driver of the Chevrolet was a male in his 60s. The Chevrolet had two female passengers, who are in their 70s. All three occupants are from Beach Park.
None of the three occupants in the Chevrolet were injured.
The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit (MCU) was activated and responded to the scene.
It is unknown if the driver of the Chrysler was wearing a seatbelt, Florip said.
Investigators believe that the occupants of the Chevrolet were wearing their seatbelts.
Florip said that the Chrysler’s speed appears to be a “major factor” in the crash.
An autopsy is in the process of being scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The man’s identity will be released after his family has been notified.
The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
