A Zion man being held in the Lake County Jail on attempted murder charges is now facing new charges for an attack on another inmate in the jail, authorities said.
Marshon D. Knox, 24, of the 2500 block of 29th Street in Zion, was charged earlier this month with battery causing bodily harm.
Lake County Sheriffโs Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the incident occurred on October 28.
Knox entered the cell of another inmate, a 24-year-old man, during a time when inmates were allowed out of their cells.
Covelli said that Knox attacked the other inmate by punching him several times in the face and body.
The other inmate defended himself. Neither inmate sustained significant injuries.
Covelli said neither inmate admitted what caused the fight but Knox was the primary aggressor.
Court records show Knox has been held in the Lake County Jail since September after he was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony.
Those charges stem from a shooting on May 24, 2021, at theย Mobil gas station near Belvidere Road and Jackson Street in Waukegan.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip told Lake and McHenry County Scanner at the time that officers located a shot-up 2019 Honda CR-V.
The Honda, which was reported stolen out of Racine, Wisconsin, was in the parking lot of the gas station in front of X Comm Wireless.
A grey hatchback sedan pulled into the parking lot and an unknown number of occupants exited the sedan and began to shoot at the Honda, Florip said.
The occupants of the Honda ran from the vehicle on foot. The shooters got back into the sedan and fled the area.
Florip said that officers recovered numerous spent shell casings from the scene.
A loaded semi-automatic handgun was also recovered in the Honda.
Witnesses only told police that the suspects were male blacks and a female black, Florip said. No one was injured in the shooting.
A Lake County judge in June 2021 issued an arrest warrant for Knox for his alleged involvement in the case, court records show.
The warrant alleges Knox fired multiple shots at two men with the intent to kill them.
Court records show Know also had an active gun case out of Zion that he was charged with in October 2020 and an active gun case out of Gurnee that was filed in November 2019.
He remains held in the Lake County Jail on a $2 million bond and would need to post $200,000 cash in order to be released.
