Sheriff’s officials say an 83-year-old man is in critical condition after he possibly suffered a medical emergency and crashed into several trees in Wadsworth Monday evening.

The Newport Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:30 p.m. Monday to the 39500 block of North Dilleys Road in Wadsworth for a report of a single-vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer with significant damage, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Mitsubishi, an 83-year-old Gurnee man, was traveling northbound on Dilleys Road.

The man failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway for an unknown reason.

The Mitsubishi drove off the east side of Dilleys Road and hit several trees and a fence.

Paramedics transported the man by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.

Covelli said it is possible the man suffered a medical event prior to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
