An employee at a nursing home in Round Lake Beach was arrested after he allegedly punched an elderly resident, leaving him injured and non-responsive, prosecutors said.

Jeffrey M. De Sana, 36, of Lake Villa, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a person over 60 and abuse of a long-term care resident causing injury.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Emma Smoler said officers responded to a call of a battery in progress on Tuesday.

The victim is an 89-year-old long-term care resident at Hillcrest Nursing Center, 1740 Circuit Drive in Round Lake Beach.

The police arrived to find the 89-year-old man non-responsive and bleeding from the eye area, Smoler said.

Officers learned De Sana was working at the facility as a nurse and was preparing the victim for bed.

De Sana was changing the victim’s diaper and the victim began resisting, at which point De Sana punched the victim in the face, Smoler said.

Paramedics transported the 89-year-old to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered De Sana held on a $200,000 bond.

De Sana remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $20,000 cash in order to be released.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on December 27.
