Firefighters rescued two cats from a house after a nearby detached garage caught on fire in unincorporated Libertyville Friday morning.

The Libertyville Fire Department responded around 10:46 a.m. Friday to the 16000 block of West Des Plaines Drive in unincorporated Libertyville for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found a detached garage on fire with exposure to the main residence.

The resident was out of the house when the fire department arrived, but there were two cats inside, Libertyville Assistant Fire Chief Mike Hall said.

Firefighters safely rescued the cats.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated, bringing over 15 surrounding fire departments to the scene and to the Libertyville fire stations for coverage.

The fire was brought under control around 45 minutes into the incident.

It was contained to the garage, but the house sustained minor damage and is uninhabitable.

No one was injured.

A damage estimate or cause of fire was not immediately available.

The incident remains under investigation by the Libertyville Fire Department.
