The coroner’s office has released the identity of a 38-year-old man who died after he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle, which was witnessed by the police, on Route 12 in Lake Zurich Saturday.
An autopsy performed on Jose Portillo, 38, of Lake Zurich, showed that he died from blunt force injuries as a result of a vehicle collision, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 11:43 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of South Rand Road in Lake Zurich.
Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief David Anderson said a call was made for a report of a male subject walking in the roadway.
Banek said it was reported that the person was possibly intoxicated.
Officers arrived in the area and observed a dark-colored SUV hit the pedestrian, identified as Portillo, who was walking on Route 12.
The vehicle fled the scene and continued southbound on Route 12, Anderson said.
Officers performed lifesaving efforts on Portillo until the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department arrived.
Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene, Anderson said.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene to conduct a crash investigation.
Southbound Route 12 between Deerpath Road and June Terrace was closed for several hours while the investigation was completed.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy on Monday on Portillo.
Investigators from the Lake Zurich Police Department and MCAT continue to investigate the incident and identify the driver of the vehicle.
Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run is encouraged to call Lake Zurich Police Department Sergeant Colin Gaffney at 847-719-1690, extension 6126.
