A rash of five carjackings and attempted carjackings, including one that left a victim injured, were committed by armed gunmen in a matter of hours Wednesday evening in Lake County.
The incidents occurred in Lindenhurst, Waukegan and Gurnee.
The first occurred at the Waukegan Fruit Market, 951 South Lewis Avenue in Waukegan, around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, according to an alert broadcasted via the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN).
A subject, described as a male black with a mask, displayed a gun and stole a Mercedes SUV from the victim.
A second carjacking occurred around 10 minutes later in the 900 block of North Green Bay Road in Waukegan.
Two subjects, described as male blacks wearing masks, displayed a gun and stole the victim’s Jaguar, according to another ISPERN alert.
Another alert was broadcasted 30 minutes later around 6:55 p.m. for an incident at Walgreens, 399 Route 45 in Lindenhurst.
A source told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the incident was an attempted carjacking. A suspect was armed with a handgun.
The Gurnee Fire Department responded to the scene to evaluate a person who had reportedly been battered.
Investigators were seen using crime scene tools on a car parked in front of the business.
Another carjacking was reported 15 minutes later at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 6140 Route 132 in Gurnee, around 7:10 p.m.
A male black offender displayed a handgun and fled the scene with the victim’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to another ISPERN alert.
The fifth incident was reported to have occurred in the 2500 block of Washington Street in Waukegan around 10:55 p.m.
Four male black suspects, at least one of which displayed a handgun, stole the victim’s Lincoln MKX. A dog was inside the car at the time.
The chase vehicle involved in all five incidents was believed to be the same car, a Mercedes SUV, which was stolen in the first carjacking of the night.
An armed vehicular hijacking was also reported Tuesday evening in Waukegan, but it was unknown whether the suspects were the same ones as the Wednesday evening suspects.
In that incident, police said a victim walked out to their yellow Chevrolet Malibu in the 2500 block of Village Park Drive in Waukegan to retrieve something from it around 11:20 p.m.
Two subjects, described as male blacks wearing black clothing and ski masks, were dropped off in a vehicle and approached the victim.
A handgun was displayed and the suspects stole the victim’s Chevrolet.
