Subahar Sabapathy, 60, of the United Arab Emirates

Prosecutors allege a man from the United Arab Emirates sexually abused a relative under the age of 13 in Buffalo Grove in 2011.

Subahar Sabapathy, 60, of the United Arab Emirates, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13, a Class 2 felony.

The victim reported to Buffalo Grove police that Sabapathy, a relative, sexually abused her on Christmas Day in 2011, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelse Banks said during a bond hearing on December 15.

Sabapathy asked the victim for a hug in her bedroom and the victim agreed, Banks said.

He then allegedly touched the victim’s breasts inappropriately for several minutes.

The victim was under the age of 13 when the alleged incident occurred.

A judge issued an arrest warrant for Sabapathy on October 25 and set bond at $500,000, court records show.

Michael Cheronis, Sabapathy’s attorney, told Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak that his client lives in the United Arab Emirates and works as a nuclear engineer.

Sabapathy flew to the U.S. to face the charge and denies the alleged sexual abuse, Cheronis said.

Cheronis asked Potkonjak to allow his client to travel out of the country for work, claiming he is not a flight risk and will show up for future court dates.

Potkonjak denied the motion and kept Sabapathy’s bond at $500,000.

Sabapathy later posted bail and was released, records show.

He is ordered to not have contact with minors under the age of 18.

An arraignment is scheduled for January 19.
