A family has been awarded over $250,000 in a lawsuit that was filed against the driver who is alleged to have caused a multiple-vehicle crash that killed a 17-year-old boy in Lake in the Hills.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on August 2 on Rakow Road between McHenry and Pyott Road in Lake in the Hills.

Police said at the time that the crash involved a Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Volkswagen Passat.

Occupants in the Volkswagen and Nissan sustained injuries in the crash.

The front seat passenger of the Volkswagen, a juvenile, was transported to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The juvenile was identified by the coroner’s office as Riely Teuerle, 17, of Lake in the Hills.

The drivers of the Volkswagen and Nissan were both transported to local hospitals.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department shut down eastbound Rakow Road at McHenry Avenue while a crash investigation was conducted. The roadway was re-opened after approximately eight hours.

“We are all in shock at the loss of this amazing young man. He was sweet, funny, loving and had a great future a head of him. I’ll never understand why his life was taken,” Teuerle’s aunt, Sandie Passuntino-Nantz, said in a social media post in August.

A wrongful death lawsuit was later filed in McHenry County Circuit Court by a family member of Teuerle.

The suit said Bryan R. Davis, of Lake in the Hills, was the driver of the Volkswagen, in which Teuerle was a passenger.

Davis was driving the Volkswagen eastbound on Rakow Road attempting to change lanes in an attempt to pass another motorist, the suit said.

Davis lost control of the vehicle, causing it to spin, roll over and hit another vehicle.

The lawsuit said Davis failed to exercise care and caution for the safety of others.

Teuerle’s family has suffered from the loss and the estate sought a verdict in excess of $50,000, the suit said.

Court documents show the teen’s estate accepted the insurance policy limits available and in total will receive $265,000, excluding attorney’s fees.

Court records show Davis has not been cited or charged in the crash.
