Officers arrested a convicted felon after he was found, with the help of a police canine, in possession of cocaine and a gun during an investigation in Crystal Lake, authorities said.
Police officers conducted a traffic stop around 3:25 p.m. Thursday in the area of Northwest Highway and Exchange Drive in Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake Police Department Canine Zeus alerted to the odor of narcotics being present within the vehicle, according to Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Richard Neumann.
A search of the 2007 Toyota Prius yielded numerous items of drug paraphernalia and a controlled substance being seized, court records show.
The controlled substance was later field tested for the presumptive presence of cocaine, Neumann said.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, Daniel P. Perry, 38, of Woodstock, was taken into custody.
Police investigators obtained a search warrant for a room Perry had occupied at the Super 8 Motel, 577 Crystal Point Road in Crystal Lake.
The Crystal Lake Police Department executed the search warrant at the motel room around 7 p.m. Thursday.
Officers discovered controlled substances and drug paraphernalia during the search.
They also found a handgun without a serial number, along with ammunition, Neumann said.
Court records show police found in total 15-100 grams of cocaine.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved charges of possession of cocaine with the intent to deliver, unlawful possession of cocaine, two counts of unlawful use of a firearm by a felon and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Perry was transported to the McHenry County Jail where he remains held on a $100,000 bond.
Court records show Perry was previously convicted of felony possession of cannabis in Woodstock in 2012.
Perry was out on bond at the time of the Crystal Lake arrest after being charged in November with felony possession of cocaine with intent to deliver in McHenry County. He had posted 10% of $80,000 to be released.
Perry is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday for a bond hearing.
