A driver was charged with driving under the influence after he drove off the roadway and the car rolled down into a ravine in Highland Park, leaving two people hospitalized.
The Highland Park Police Department responded around 11:45 p.m. Sunday to the 2300 block of St. Johns Avenue.
Officers received a call for a suspicious incident in the area.
Officers arrived and located a single-vehicle crash.
It was determined the vehicle had traveled off the roadway from St. Johns Avenue and plunged down a ravine.
The car came to a rest after rolling over onto its roof approximately 50 feet from the roadway, officials said.
The Highland Park Fire Department responded to the scene but all occupants of the car had been able to get out of the car on their own.
The driver of the car, Angel Castrejon, 19, of Highwood, allegedly fled the scene.
Officers located Castrejon and took him into custody. It was determined he had been driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Paramedics transported two people to Highland Park Hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Castrejon was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Ernie’s Wrecker Service was called to the scene to remove the car from the ravine.
Castrejon was released on a personal recognizance bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 24.
