Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man after he allegedly recklessly fired shots from a gun while standing in the garage of his occupied home near Crystal Lake Sunday evening.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to the 3600 block of Fawn Trail in Prairie Grove, just east of Crystal Lake, for a call of shots fired.
A woman called 911 to report that her spouse had gone into the garage with a gun and that shots were fired, according to police radio traffic.
The woman and a child were inside the home at the time of the incident.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived, set up a perimeter and were able to get the woman and child out of the home.
The suspect, Victor Taras, 49, of Crystal Lake, surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody just before 10 p.m.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said Taras endangered the safety of a woman.
Taras, in a “reckless manner,” discharged a firearm while standing in his garage with the overhead door open, the complaint said.
He admitted to firing two shots “into the darkness” outside of the garage, the complaint said.
The residence is in close proximity to other homes.
McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge set bond at $10,000 during a Monday morning court hearing.
Taras remains held in the McHenry County Jail. He would need to post $1,000 cash in order to be released.
Taras is scheduled to appear in court again on January 30 for a status of preliminary hearing.
