Two are in custody after police say a shootout at a gas station in Beach Park left one of the gunmen along with a 21-year-old man hospitalized Sunday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:35 a.m. Sunday to the Citgo gas station, 39039 Lewis Avenue in Beach Park, for a report of shots fired.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and learned that everyone involved in the incident fled, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Deputies learned a 21-year-old Wadsworth man had been dropped off at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan with a gunshot wound.

A second injured person, Cyria A. Selvy, 23, of Zion, was dropped off at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville also with a gunshot wound.

A preliminary investigation shows Rigoberto Morales, 45, of Waukegan, was involved in a verbal altercation with a 30-year-old Zion man, Covelli said.

During the argument, Selvy, who was with the 30-year-old man, pulled out a firearm, Covelli said.

She then fired the gun at a 21-year-old Wadsworth man, who was with Morales, and struck him, Covelli said. The 21-year-old man’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Morales then pulled a gun and shot in the direction of Selvy, Covelli said.

The two reportedly exchanged gunfire with each other and Selvy was struck twice.

Nobody else was struck during the gunfire. All of the individuals involved fled the gas station.

It was determined Selvy had an active arrest warrant for two counts of unlawful purchase of a firearm.

Covelli said Selvy was taken into custody upon her discharge from the hospital and is currently in custody at the sheriff’s office.

Additional charges are likely against Selvy.

Detectives arrested Morales on Monday and recovered the firearm he allegedly used in the shooting.
