The sheriff’s Special Investigations Group arrested an alleged drug dealer during a search warrant in Winthrop Harbor where detectives found drugs and a gun, authorities said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group concluded a narcotics investigation on Wednesday.
The investigations group, which is a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) funded task force, had been conducting a several-month-long investigation.
The Special Investigations Group executed a search warrant at the home of Alexander Thomas, 34, in the 600 block of Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor.
Nearly 100 grams of heroin, over 25 grams of cocaine, ecstasy, hydrocodone pills and other drugs were recovered, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
Detectives also seized a 9mm pistol during the search warrant, Covelli said.
Thomas was arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail.
The Winthrop Harbor Police Department, which is a member of the Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group, assisted in the investigation.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
“This is yet another example of the outstanding work conducted by the members of our Special Investigations Group,” Sheriff John D. Idleburg said.
“Thanks to the federal HIDTA designation we received for the group, we have tremendous resources to continue investigating and apprehending drug traffickers, violent gang members, those using firearms to commit crimes against others, and human traffickers,” Idleburg said.
Thomas remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing Thursday morning.
