An 80-year-old man died after he was struck by a vehicle while reportedly trying to cross Route 62 in Algonquin with a dog Thursday evening, police said.

The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 8:07 p.m. Thursday to Algonquin Road and Compton Drive for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car.

Officers arrived to find an 80-year-old Carpentersville man that had been struck by a vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old Lake in the Hills man.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Algonquin Road east of Compton Drive.

Witnesses told police that the pedestrian was with a dog walking southbound across the eastbound lanes of Algonquin Road.

Eastbound traffic had been proceeding on a green light when the pedestrian was struck, witnesses told police.

The man was wearing non-contrasting dark clothing and was not within a crosswalk, police said.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was called to the scene but paramedics had to ground transport the victim to the hospital due to his severe injuries.

The 80-year-old man died after arriving at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley.

The driver of the involved vehicle was not injured, police said.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The crash caused an approximately three-hour closure of both eastbound lanes of Route 62 from Compton Drive to Route 25.

The incident remains under investigation by the Algonquin Police Department.
