A video captured several students attacking another student while security tried to intervene at Waukegan High School Brookside Campus earlier this week.
School officials said in a letter to parents that “several incidents” occurred Friday that caused the Brookside Campus to be placed on soft lockdown.
Video taken by a student showed multiple students attacking one student while a lone security guard tried to stop it.
A second fight broke out during the first one and numerous students were seen standing around the hallway as it occurred.
Additional security guards arrived and were able to break up the fights, the video showed.
School officials said law enforcement was notified of the incidents.
The school was working with the Waukegan Police Department to increase the building’s police presence for the remainder of the day.
Several extra district school resource officers were temporarily placed at the school and dismissal was staggered.
“Our school will take this type of action from time to time to ensure the safety of students and staff, while also ensuring safety measures have a minimal impact on the learning environment,” the letter said.
“… appropriate action in accordance with district policy will be determined for any students involved… We are sharing this with you in the spirit of transparency, and to dismiss any rumors you may have heard about this incident,” the letter said.
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed the fight as having occurred on Wednesday, not Friday.
