Lake County Sheriff Canine Dax tracked down a man who allegedly fled from police and caused a crash that left a woman seriously injured in Round Lake, authorities said.

William Neely Jr., 25, of Ingleside, was charged with failure to report a crash with injury, aggravated fleeing to elude, two counts of reckless driving, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, two counts of disregarding a traffic control device, speeding and improper turn signal.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Timothy Niehus said officers were flagged down around 12:40 a.m. Saturday by someone who reported a belligerent motorist at the Burger King on Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.

Officers spotted the silver sedan exit the parking lot and onto Rollins Road.

Officers witnessed the car commit a traffic violation and then it suddenly began driving at a high rate of speed, Niehus said.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the car but it did not stop.

The car nearly caused a crash and officers stopped pursuing the car, Niehus said.

Round Lake officers located the car a short time later at Cedar Lake Road and Washington Street in Round Lake.

The car reportedly went through red lights at least two intersections.

Niehus said officers lost the vehicle but later located it again at Cedar Lake Road and Towline Road.

The car continued fleeing and crashed into a parked car near Cedar Lake Road and Jonathan Drive.

Neely fled the car on foot and jumped a fence, at which time officers lost sight of the man, Niehus said.

Officers found a female passenger who was in and out of consciousness.

She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with serious injuries.

A perimeter was set up to locate Neely, Niehus said.

Lake County Sheriff Canine Dax and Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza were called to the scene to assist in the search.

Dax tracked for approximately three miles and located Neely hiding near a shoreline, the sheriff’s office said.

Following the two-hour search, Neely was taken into custody by officers near Saddlebrook Drive and Rodeo Drive in Round Lake Park.

Neely was on parole at the time for a 10-year sentence for an attempted murder case.

Lake County Judge Patricia Cornell ordered Neely held on a $500,000 bond.

He remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $50,000 cash in order to be released.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 30.
