Authorities say a man fatally shot himself while fleeing from officers who were investigating a stolen car at a currency exchange in Waukegan Wednesday afternoon.

The Waukegan Police Department responded around 2:11 p.m. Wednesday to the CFSC Currency Exchange, 3200 Grand Avenue in Waukegan.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Brian Mullen said officers received a call regarding a stolen vehicle investigation.

Officers arrived on the scene and a man fled on foot from them, Mullen said.

Officers attempted to take the man into custody.

Mullen said that the man produced a firearm and discharged it, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting happened outside of the currency exchange.

Paramedics with the Waukegan Fire Department transported the man to an area hospital for treatment where he died from his injuries.

The man is in his 30s and his identity is being withheld until his family has been notified.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy on him.

Mullen said the officer was not injured but was taken to an area hospital for a precautionary exam and released.

The officer is a six-year veteran of the Waukegan Police Department and is assigned to the patrol division.

Mullen said the officer has been placed on administrative leave.

The Illinois State Police Zone 1 Investigation Division is investigating the incident.

Mullen said that additional information regarding the stolen vehicle investigation is not being released at this time.
