Police say Interstate 94 in Lake County and Kenosha County has been reopened following a major pileup, involving dozens of vehicles, which caused major delays Friday afternoon.

The incident began around 1:25 p.m. Friday on Interstate 94 near County Highway ML near Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

Illinois State Police said they were contacted by the Wisconsin State Patrol that advised of a 15-70 car crash.

The pileup occurred in the northbound, also known as the westbound, lanes of the interstate.

Approximately 10 ambulances were dispatched to the scene from numerous fire departments.

The exact number of victims and vehicles involved was not immediately known.

Illinois State Police troopers responded to the border to assist with traffic control.

Traffic was diverted off Interstate 94 at both Route 173 and Russell Road.

Traffic maps showed heavy traffic on westbound Interstate 94 from the border south to Wadsworth Road in Wadsworth.

Illinois State Police reported around 5:25 p.m. that the crash had been cleared and road closures were lifted.

The incident occurred during a severe winter weather event with snow, ice and whiteout conditions believed to be a factor, according to Wisconsin State Patrol.

The Kenosha County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Kenosha County Highway Department, Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Illinois Department of Transportation assisted with the incident, the state patrol said.
