One person was transported to the hospital with injuries after a car struck the side of an ambulance near Crystal Lake Thursday afternoon.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Walkup Road and Hillside Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

The crash involved a silver Honda sedan and an A-TEC private ambulance.

Two EMS workers were inside the ambulance at the time but they were not transporting any patients when the crash occurred, according to fire department radio traffic.

The two involved vehicles came to a stop just north of the intersection.

Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies blocked off traffic northbound on Walkup Road at Hillside Road.

Paramedics transported an occupant of the Honda to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley. The extent of their injuries was unknown.

A tow truck was called to the scene to remove the Honda, which had sustained heavy front-end damage.

The ambulance sustained minor damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said they did not have further information on the crash.

It is unclear how the crash was caused or if either driver was cited.
