Authorities have released the identity of a 32-year-old man who died after he allegedly pulled a gun and it “discharged” during a struggle with police in Waukegan.
An autopsy performed on Corey D. Chandler, 32, showed he died from a gunshot wound, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The Waukegan Police Department responded around 2:11 p.m. on January 25 to the CFSC Currency Exchange, 3200 Grand Avenue in Waukegan.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Brian Mullen said officers received a call regarding a stolen vehicle investigation.
Officers arrived on the scene and a man, later identified as Chandler, fled on foot from them, Mullen said.
A struggle ensued between Chandler and an officer, according to Illinois State Police.
Chandler drew a firearm from his person and it discharged during the struggle, state police said.
Mullen said the man was the one who discharged the weapon.
State police said the officer did not discharge their weapon.
The shooting happened outside of the currency exchange and police set up crime scene tape around the business.
Paramedics with the Waukegan Fire Department transported Chandler to an area hospital for treatment where he died from his injuries.
The coroner’s office said Chandler’s town of residence is unclear at this time. A manner of death has not been determined yet.
Mullen said the officer was not injured but was taken to an area hospital for a precautionary exam and released.
The officer is a six-year veteran of the Waukegan Police Department and is assigned to the patrol division.
Mullen said the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
The Illinois State Police Zone 1 Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
