A Waukegan man allegedly attacked his father, who is over 60 years old, with a hammer and left him with a severe facial injury in Waukegan, prosecutors said.
Sean M. Vargas, 31, of Waukegan, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to an elderly victim, domestic battery physical contact and domestic battery causing bodily harm.
The Waukegan Police Department responded on January 26 to the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Washington Street in Waukegan.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Francis DeRosa said a 911 call was made for a suicidal person at the location.
It was learned that Vargas and his father had gotten into a verbal altercation.
Vargas attacked the victim with a hammer during the altercation, DeRosa said.
Officers found Vargas nearby with a hammer in his hand. Vargas admitted that he “beat up” his father.
The victim was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
DeRosa said the victim suffered severe damage to his eye.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Vargas held on a $100,000 bond.
Vargas remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $10,000 cash in order to be released.
Potkonjak ordered Vargas to have no contact with the victim and not possess any dangerous weapons, along with several other bond conditions.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 22.
