Fire department crews were able to safely rescue two ice fishermen off the ice after they fell through on Antioch Lake in Antioch Tuesday afternoon.

The Antioch Fire Department responded around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Route 173 west of Main Street in Antioch for a report of an ice rescue.

Antioch Fire Chief Jon Cokefair said it was reported that a person went through the ice on Antioch Lake.

It was reported that the person who went through the ice was assisted out by a bystander.

An Antioch fire airboat with surface rescue personnel in exposure suits was dispatched.

Cokefair said a fire airboat from Fox Lake and divers from our neighboring departments were also dispatched.

Due to weak ice conditions, the Antioch airboat had to be used to retrieve the people off the ice.

The fishermen were brought to shore for evaluation and no injuries were reported.

Cokefair said the fire department reminds the community and surrounding areas that the ice is very weak and unsafe due to warmer conditions.

“Please stay off the ice until colder temperatures return,” Cokefair said.
