A Waukegan police canine handler was named the department’s employee of the month after he and his canine apprehended multiple offenders in January.

Waukegan Police Officer Andrew Orozco and his canine partner Tango assisted on numerous calls in January, according to the police department.

They responded to a burglary of a business in Fountain Square.

Orozco and Tango began to search the area for the offender when they arrived.

They later located the offender hiding inside a container, the department said.

Orozco was able to call out the offender and take him into custody.

The two also responded to a call in January involving a suspicious vehicle whose driver was passed out while the car was running.

Orozco was able to speak with the driver after they attempted to drive off.

Orozco learned that the driver had multiple arrest warrants following an investigation.

Orozco and Tango assisted many area police agencies with canine work last month, the department said.

“He is always willing to go the extra mile to help his fellow officers,” said the police supervisor who nominated Orozco for the award.

“Officer Orozco and Tango, thank you for your dedication and service to the City of Waukegan!” the police department said.
